‘Mad Men’s’ January Jones: I Channeled My Pregnancy Mood Swings Into Betty Francis

Being an expectant mom can make it difficult to get through a long workday, but for “Mad Men” star January Jones, playing the frosty Betty Francis on the hit series was just what the doctor ordered.

“I was on such a roller coaster of emotions — I found it really therapeutic to go to work and to be able to channel all these mood swings into Betty,” the actress told People of filming the hit AMC show while pregnant. “It was really great, actually.”

The 34-year-old actress, who gave birth to baby Xander in September, added that viewers won’t see a drastic change to Betty’s glamorous wardrobe due to her recent pregnancy, but there will be a subtle move.

“We didn’t do anything specifically for me because of my post-baby [body],” she told the mag. “But Betty’s had style evolution.”

Betty’s evolving on-screen style is partially due to the character’s new marriage to politician Henry Francis (played by Christopher Stanley).

“I think especially since she’s been married to Henry and has become a politician’s wife, she’s made a change in her look,” January said. “Betty likes to play dress up, so instead of molding herself after a Grace Kelly or a movie star, she’s wearing things that she thinks a Jackie Kennedy would wear.”

“Mad Men” returns to the small screen with its fifth season premiere tonight at 9/8c on AMC.
