Maggie Q On How Her ‘Stalker’ Character Differs From ‘Nikita’

“Nikita” alum Maggie Q is fighting crime in a new way on CBS drama “Stalker,” premiering Wednesday night, and she feels like her new role is a very grown up part.

“I totally do. I actually feel, you know, my age coming into play in this role and exploring a sense of strength that’s different than kicking a** and sort of doing all that stuff,” Maggie told reporters on a recent visit to the show’s Los Angeles set, referring to how her new role as Lt. Beth Davis differs from playing Nikita on The CW.

As Beth, Maggie heads up a team in the Threat Assessment Unit of the LAPD, made up of Det. Ben Caldwell (Victor Rasuk), Det. Janice Lawrence (“True Blood” alum Mariana Klaveno) and New York newcomer Det. Jack Larsen (Dylan McDermott). They work together to help victims of stalking.

“There’s something very internally strong about Beth because her circumstances [have] been rough. We’ll find that out later,” Maggie continued.

“I think that strength is also, if it’s real, it’s deep, it’s innate. It’s something you feel when someone walks into a room. It’s something you feel when somebody opens their mouth. You know it, you just know it,” she said. “You know you don’t mess with certain people. You know that certain people have a depth of sort of experience and knowledge and that’s very, very much her, so I’m enjoying that because I think that is a true example of the strong woman.”

Dylan’s character, Jack, has a past that is hinted at as he transfers to the LA office in the show’s series premiere, and he said he is looking forward to seeing that explored as the episodes roll out on CBS.

“I think that was kind of the attraction to the role is that [Beth and Jack] both had pasts and… a lot of these procedural shows, you don’t really know much about the characters and I think that the great thing about this show is that, you know, there’s a lot of meat on the bone,” he said, adding that hopefully, “we’ll get to know them a lot more” over many seasons.

The first case Beth’s team handles in the series premiere is shocking, following a woman who becomes a victim of a violent stalker. In the episode a male is also stalked and harassed, and the show will feature a variety of stalking cases in the show.

“We can’t just have a female victim every week, so we’re really trying hard to mix that up, so it’s not just a man chasing a woman,” Dylan said.

“And it’s not just adults too. We get into that in the second episode,” Maggie added. “Obsessive compulsive behavior can be transferred on to anyone, anything.”

“Stalker” premieres Wednesday October 1 at 10/9c on CBS.
