Maisie Williams Finds New Acting Challenge Playing Arya In ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5

Maisie Williams hinted that Arya Stark is evolving in different ways in “Game of Thrones” Season 5.

When we caught up with the actress over the weekend, she told us that playing the role of the youngest Stark daughter this time around in the HBO drama came with new challenges.

“I say this every year, it’s like, ‘Arya’s changed,’ but this year, as an actor, it was quite difficult for me because ‘Game of Thrones’ is sort of my safety net, my comfort blanket, because I come back every single year and it’s the same crew and stuff. This year was the first year that I was kind of like, ‘This is not the Arya that I am used to.’ And yeah, it was a big jump and I’m really nervous actually, for everyone to see it,” Maisie told Access Hollywood over the weekend at the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG Awards party at the Chateau Marmont.

Maisie confirmed she had to dig deep as an actress for the scenes viewers will begin to see in Season 5, starting April 12 at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.

“It was just not what I’m used to doing on ‘Game of Thrones,'” she said.

Arya ended Season 4, having left The Hound (Rory McCann) behind, gravely injured on a rock (come on, Sandor, pull through!). She then took the coin the man of many faces, Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) gave her at the end of Season 2, and used it to board a ship to Braavos. The epic shot of Arya on a boat, sailing off on a new adventure was the final scene of the season. Maisie revealed it was actually filmed in a less-than-epic space.

“It was a good end to her storyline, but yeah, it was an epic shot and people kept Tweeting me like, ‘Where was that filmed?’ and I’ll be completely honest with you, it was filmed in a car park, with a green screen, so, on the day it wasn’t quite as epic as it looked by the end,” Maisie said. “But, yeah, it was fun.”

This week, Episode 9 and 10 of “Game of Thrones” Season 4, and the trailer for Season 5, hit IMAX screens across the country (making it the first television show to make that leap).

“I think that’s amazing and plus, when we sat down to watch the premiere each year, it kind of feels like that’s the place it belongs, that kind of big screen,” she said of the show heading to IMAX. “The episodes are so epic, and particularly, the final two. I think, yeah, it’s going to go down really well and I’m kind of sad I can’t be there.”
