Marilu Henner Demonstrates Her ‘Superior Autobiographical Memory’ On ‘60 Minutes’

Marilu Henner revealed her remarkable mental abilities on Sunday night’s “60 Minutes” – the former “Taxi” star showed how she can remember every day of her life.

Marilu was one of several people featured in a report from Lesley Stahl on people who have what scientists are calling a “superior autobiographical memory.” From which shoe she wore on which day, to what she said in a discussion with her husband, to each and every break-up, Marilu can remember it all.

On the fascinating segment, Marilu took a battery of tests that proved her remarkable ability.

When asked by her son which day was Valentine’s Day in 1979, Marilu easily whipped out the exact day of the week on which it fell.

“It was a Wednesday,” she promptly replied.

In a 1996 at home visit with Access Hollywood, our then host, Larry Mendte, asked Marilu about her special skill, but her piano playing toddler proved too much of a distraction.

“We understand you are amazing with dates, I’m going to give you my birthday you tell me what day it is OK? January 16, 1957,” Larry said.

“Oh, don’t do this to me now,” she laughed as her son Nicky distracted the proud mom.

Interestingly, of the five people featured in a panel interview on Sunday night’s “60 Minutes,” Marilu was the only one who was either married (her third marriage) or had children.

Doctors studying people with this strong memory talent admitted they often demonstrate obsessive-compulsive disorder like behaviors. For one of the panelists, it was hand washing — for Marilu, it was her well-organized closet.

“I like the shoes a certain way: Right foot going this way, left foot going that way, so you can always see the toe and the heel on every pair,” she said.

And Access saw that closet during our 1996 visit.

“Well, I’m kind of famous for my closet because I usually go to people’s houses as a gift and redo their closet — and the trick to a good closet is you get all the same hangers,” she told Larry at the time.

So, how far back does Marilu’s memory go?

Several decades! Something that she demonstrated when Leslie asked her about the date October 26, 1976.

“October 26, 1976 was a Tuesday,” Marilu said. “I [was] shooting a ring around the collar commercial in Venice, Italy.

“And you saw a second and a half mood shot of Venice and then a gondolier singing, ‘Of Love I Sing, tra-la-la-la, for you got ring around the coll-la-la.’ And I went, ‘My powder didn’t work,’” she laughed.

Marilu said that the memory has served her well over the years.

“I’ve always loved having this memory,” she told Leslie. “I feel as an actress and writer it has been indispensable and as a mother and as a wife certainly.”
