Martin Sheen Says Son Charlie Is Emotionally Like A Child

Martin Sheen says he understands the “hell” that son Charlie Sheen is going through and believes his son is emotionally still a child.

While promoting his new movie, “The Way,” which son Emilio Estevez wrote, directed and co-stars with his dad in, the 70-year-old actor was asked if he believed faith could help Charlie.

“Faith can help all of us. Addiction is the dark side. It’s a reflection of despair. And it’s fed by all the other negativity,” Martin reportedly told the U.K.‘s Telegraph magazine.

Martin was also asked if his son is open to taking his advice.

“Every now and then,” Martin said. “Depends on whether it’s a moment of clarity for him. I can’t determine that for him. You know, Charlie’s 45 years old. He’s not a kid. Emotionally he still is. Because when you’re addicted, you don’t grow emotionally. So when you get clean and sober you’re starting at the moment you started using drugs or alcohol. You’re emotionally crippled.

“But I know what hell he’s living in. I’ve had psychotic episodes in public. One of them was on camera – the opening scene of ‘Apocalypse Now,’” he continued. “So, I know what Charlie is going through. And when you do something like that, that is out of control, that’s the most difficult thing. You have to have courage.”

Charlie’s older brother, Emilio Estevez, 48, also reportedly spoke out about his brother, expressing frustration over his sibling’s recent behavior.

“There’s that thing in ‘The Godfather: Part II’ of, ‘I love you, Fredo, you’re my brother, but don’t ever take sides with anyone against the family,’ then Michael Corleone has to have Fredo ‘taken out’ on the boat,’” Emilio reportedly told Britain’s The Sun. “There are times, like these, when I want to take Charlie out for a boat ride. Charlie should know that he might have a boat ride in the future. Someone’s got to be Michael Corleone.”

Despite his frustrations, Emilio is optimistic about Charlie’s future.

“There’s always hope, and there are so many examples of people pulling themselves out of the sh** and having a rebirth,” he reportedly told the paper. “So you just pray for him and hope he has that moment of clarity.”

Reps for Martin and Emilio were not immediately available for comment when contacted by Access Hollywood.
