Martina Navratilova Talks ‘Dancing’ Boot: ‘I Gave It My Best’

Martina Navratilova and professional partner Tony Dovolani were Season 14’s first couple to get the “Dancing with the Stars” boot on Tuesday, and the tennis star is taking the loss quite hard.

“I tried, I gave it my best, I put myself on the line [and it] didn’t quite work out the way we wanted to,” Martina told Access Hollywood following the elimination on Tuesday night. “I’m really disappointed for Tony because I know he wanted to do more with me because we’re just getting started. If I had known I was going to be on this show I would have taken a few more lessons, but I had no dance experience unlike a lot of people.

“It was a tough crowd, it was a tough group,” she added. “They’re all really good and any other year, I think I would have squeaked through, but not this year.”

Though her ballroom bliss was short-lived, the 55-year-old athlete did learn a few things about herself through the “DWTS” process.

“I didn’t know I could dance in high heels,” she told Access. “Well, they’re not really that high, but I’ve gotten comfortable with high heel shoes and dresses, so it’s cool.”

As for Martina’s partner Tony, the “DWTS” veteran said their elimination was hard to swallow.

“I’m just devastated right now because I wanted to go further,” he told Access. “I love this woman. I think she’s fantastic and I want America to get to know her, and they’re not going to now.”

Adding, “I wanted them to get to know her in a different way, you know, through her hard work and how dedicated she is and how enthusiastic she was for every single rehearsal we ever went to. So that’s the part that people are going to miss.”
