Matthew McConaughey Reveals Wife Camila Alves ‘Didn’t Say Yes Right Away’ When He Proposed

Good things come to those who wait! Matthew McConaughey has
revealed that wife Camila Alves initially hesitated to accept his proposal.

In a new cover interview for November’s Esquire, the star
recalled asking his longtime love to marry him back in 2011. According to
Matthew, the moment took a bit longer than he expected.

“I remember hitting the knee, looking into her
eyes,” he began. “I remember her face. I remember this smile coming
up from her feet. I remember her having to catch her breath.”

However, the answer he was hoping for didn’t immediately follow – much to the chagrin of their loved ones standing by.

“And she didn’t say yes right away,” Matthew admitted. “And then the whole family was going, ‘Jeezus, she’s gonna say no.'”

The couple tied the knot in 2012, but not before Camila reportedly did some waiting of her own.

According to the mag, the Brazilian model took charge after Matthew’s busy schedule made it hard to set a wedding date. Months after their engagement, she handed him an invitation to their nuptials with one simple instruction – “Be there.”

Four years after making their union official, the A-lister has credited Camila and their three children – sons Levi, 8, and Livingston, 3, and daughter Vida, 6 – with helping him “unbrand” in the late 2000s after starring in a string of romantic comedies.

“A good woman gives a man courage and confidence,” he told the mag of Camila’s support, explaining how fatherhood also gave him the boost he needed to retool his Hollywood image. The move worked – Matthew began starring in serious dramas and took home Oscar gold in 2014 for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

“Man is never more masculine than after the birth of his first child,” Matthew said of welcoming Levi back in 2008.

“I don’t mean in a macho way,” he clarified. “I mean in terms of giving a man strength.”
