Meryl Streep to Star In ‘Mamma Mia!’ Film

Los Angeles, Calif. (January 11, 2007) — Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep will lead the cast of the film “Mamma Mia!,” her first movie musical. The film will be produced by Universal Pictures and is expected to start shooting this summer in both Greece and Great Britain.

Streep will play the role of Donna Sheridan, a single mother whose fatherless daughter embarks on a search for the paternal figure. The ensuing drama opens the gates for the 22 Abba songs that conform the original musical play.

Producers Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, and executive producers Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson bring in ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus to work on the film. Also, Phyllida Lloyd, director of the London and Broadway productions will make her feature-film directing debut on “Mamma Mia!”

“[Meryl Streep] was always at the top of our wish list, and she encapsulates the spirit and energy and has the powerhouse qualities that character requires,” producer Judy Craymer told the Daily Variety.
