Monica Potter’s “Parenthood” character, Kristina Braverman, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer on the show and the actress said the painful storyline hits eerily close to home.
“I had gone for a mammogram and they had found something,” Monica told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Wednesday’s Access Hollywood Live, of how her real-life brush with breast cancer inspired the show’s storyline. “I e-mailed [series creator Jason Katims] quickly and said, ‘What are we doing for Kristina this season? I think maybe we should explore breast cancer.’”
Jason – whose wife is a breast cancer survivor and has been cancer-free for two years – agreed with Monica, and revealed plans were already underway to incorporate “the big C” into the NBC show’s plotline.
“He e-mailed me back right away and said, ‘We’re already breaking that story,’” Monica said. “So, it was just very bizarre.”
Fortunately, Monica’s real life health scare turned out to be benign.
“It’s fine – I went again last week for a checkup and I’m gonna go every four or five months,” she said. “It’s a cyst… I’m fine.”
“Parenthood” airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
