Mother’s Day DIY Gifts

In today’s Glam Slam feature: Mother’s Day is this Sunday and forget the usual perfume or typical bouquet – surprise her and make her gift yourself -with flowers!

Steal these fashionable floral ideas from Tara Grand from By The Bloom, an LA-based flower shop on wheels. (Think food truck, but with flowers!)

Flower Crown

  • Make your base: select your material, whether it is wired jute rope, pipe cleaners, curly willow or olive branches…find something that you like and measure it to your head. Tape, wrap or wire it to fit in a circle.
  • Select your flowers: choose everything you will want to attach and prepare them ahead of application. Make an assembly line in front of you. Cut stems about an inch and either wire or glue them in the pattern you wish around your base.
  • Hide your mechanics! Glue leaves, buds or blooms to hide any glue, tape or wire. It will look more professional and finished this way!

Cuff Bracelet

  • Make your base: select your material, an old cuff you no longer wear or wired jute rope. Anything that fits your wrist, but must be sturdy and comfortable, as well as providing a flat/curved surface on which to attach your flowers.
  • Select your flowers: choose everything you will want to attach and prepare them ahead of application. Make an assembly line in front of you. Cut off stems so your blooms have a flat bottom which you then can glue in your desired pattern to the base.
  • Hide your mechanics! Glue leaves, buds or blooms to hide any glue, tape or wire. It will look more professional and finished this way!

Cufflinks

  • Make your base: this is a little trickier as a base is not easy to make for cufflinks. My advice is to use an old pair that you no longer wear. The larger the surface, the more space on which to glue your blooms.
  • These are small, so choose small and just a few items. Cut off stems and glue to the surface in the pattern/arrangement you wish.
  • Hide your mechanics! Glue leaves, buds or blooms to hide any glue, tape or wire. It will look more professional and finished this way!

Pin

  • No base required.
  • Select your flowers: keep in mind you are attaching this with a pin(s) to your dress or shirt so don’t make it too big or heavy otherwise it won’t hold onto the fabric. Create your design in your hand by layering the flowers & foliage to form the design your desire. Cut stems to approx. 2 inches. Wrap with tape or wire. Cover with ribbon, raffia, lace or whatever material you like.
  • Using a long pin with pearl/round head, attach the pin(s) to your garment with the pin facing down towards your feet and through the wrapped stems to attach. You don’t want to be pricked by the pin, so be careful to attach properly!
