NBC Defends ‘Jay Leno Show’ Against Reports Show Could Be Axed

Amid rumors that NBC is considering axing the low-rated “Jay Leno Show” from its primetime lineup, the network is speaking out.

“Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today,” an NBC rep said in a statement to Access Hollywood. “As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance.”

The statement came in response to a report from industry site FTVLive.com, which claimed that the comedy show was not making money and could potentially be pulled after the Winter Olympics or in fall.

NBC has ordered a hefty number of pilots for the fall season, fueling suspicions that some could replace the 10 PM “The Jay Leno Show.”

The show, in a time slot ordinarily used for scripted dramas, arrived last fall after Leno was replaced by Conan O’Brien on “The Tonight Show.”
