‘NCIS’ Alum Michael Weatherly Excited For Challenge Of New Series, ‘Bull’

“NCIS” alum Michael Weatherly returns to CBS in September, fronting his own series, “Bull.”

Michael stars as Dr. Jason Bull in the drama, which is inspired by Dr. Phil McGraw’s early career and work running a trial-consulting firm.

Michael told reporters on Wednesday, during CBS’ portion of the Television Critics Association Summer Tour, that his new show is, “an amazing change and discovery,” when asked about going from “NCIS” to the new series.

The actor went on to call his time on “NCIS,” playing Tony DiNozzo, “an extraordinary, unique ride.”

“It really felt like a circle that had gone all the way around…  and [I] really felt happy with the resolution with the character and my time on the show,” he added, before turning his thoughts to his current project.

“‘Bull’ is a big show,” he continued. “It’s a big show with a lot of characters. It’s complex… it’s a different part of my — I mean, I solve problems the same way as an actor, but it really requires a lot of [different] muscles.”

The actor said he is “deeply grateful and humbled” that the opportunity came up for “Bull.”

Dr. Phil is an executive producer on the series and the two first met years ago when Michael once recorded a gag where his “NCIS” character was in the audience of “Dr. Phil.”

As for their more recent interactions, Michael said that, “while this isn’t a biographical show, Phil is an inspiration for a very complex and super-intelligent guy, who understands how simple people can be, but how tricky it is to find that element of simplicity.”
