Nicole Richie Pleads Not Guilty To Drunk Driving

GLENDALE, Calif. (February 20, 2007) — Nicole Richie’s lawyer has entered a not guilty plea on her behalf on a drunk driving charge.

Richie is charged with being under the influence of alcohol and an unspecified drug. She was arrested after 9-1-1 callers reported her SUV headed the wrong way on a freeway near Los Ageles December 11.

The California Highway Patrol says Richie failed a field sobriety test. Officer Todd Workman has said Richie said she had smoked marijuana and had taken the prescription painkiller Vicodin, but no drugs were found on her or in her car.

Richie’s case contains an allegation that she had a prior DUI conviction in June 2003. Under California law, that means Richie could face between 90 days and a year in jail, fined up to a thousand dollars and have her driving privileges suspended.
