Nigel Lythgoe Working On Bringing Fame Back To Television

Nigel Lythgoe is bringing beloved ‘80s drama “Fame” back to television.

The “So You Think You Can Dance” judge and executive producer is working with MGM Television on a new “Fame,” based on the original, a rep for the star confirmed to Access Hollywood on Tuesday.

“In my lifetime, I’ve discovered a great many incredibly talented individuals,” Nigel Lythgoe said in a statement. “Some have achieved stardom. Simultaneously, I’ve seen many dreams shattered, egos destroyed and lives changed forever. The end destination may well be fame and fortune, but the road to stardom is littered with broken hearts. I look forward to stripping away the glitter and glamour and revealing the true mixture of passion, humanity, exhaustion and sacrifice that these richly talented individuals endure on their road to ‘Fame.’”

An MGM boss said the company is excited to team up with Nigel, Kary McHoul, President of Nigel Lythgoe Productions, Charles Segars and Chad Gutstein

“This is a great opportunity for MGM to partner with world-class producer Nigel Lythgoe, whose unmatched experience with telling the true stories of talented people striving for success will set ‘Fame’ apart, ” Roma Khanna, President Television and Digital, MGM, said in a statement. “We are excited to work with Nigel, Charles and the team to identify a talented writer to create the new ‘Fame’; one that reflects the struggles and joys unique to the multitude of aspiring talent today.”

“Fame” was both a film and a television series in the 1980s.

Fans will recall Debbie Allen and pop star Nia Peeples were among the cast on the original “Fame” television series.

In 2009, “Fame” was reimagined as a movie, starring “The Client List’s” Naturi Naughton and “CSI’s” Kay Panabaker.

And, it appears “Fame” might not be the only reboot in the works from the MGM archives. Deadline reported that MGM is looking to go through the archives in search of other projects to redo.
