‘Now 23’ Tops Billboard Chart; Groban & Urban Debut Strong

The “Now” series continues its trend of being a chart-topper with the latest installment, “Now, Volume 23,” debuting at #1 on The Billboard 200 album chart with 336,666 copies sold.

“Now” is short for “Now That’s What I Call Music,” a compilation series of various artists started in The United Kingdom in 1983. Due to the enormous popularity of the series in the UK (it’s currently up to Volume 64 there), it was inevitable that other countries would release their own versions. China, Japan, Canada and Australia are just some of the countries with “Now” series.

Volume 23 here in the U.S. features big hits from Fergie, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Kenny Chesney and many other current music stars.

Josh Groban returns to the charts with his new release, “Awake,” coming in at #2 with 270,353 albums sold. It’s been exactly three years since Groban’s last album “Closer” was released, which eventually peaked at #1 on the Billboard chart.

The #3 position belongs to country sensation Keith Urban, whose new release “Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing” sold 270,280 copies. This good news comes right on the heels of Urban’s win for Male Vocalist Of The Year at the Country Music Association awards last week.

Fellow country stars Sugarland and Carrie Underwood may also have benefitted from their CMA appearances last week, as Sugarland’s new album “Enjoy The Ride” debuted at #4, while “Female Vocalist of the Year” Underwood saw a big jump up the chart to bring her back into the Top 10 at #9.

Another debut to crack the Top 10 this week belongs to rapper Jim Jones. His “Hustler’s P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment)” comes in at #6, just shy of last year’s “Harlem: Diary of a Summer,” which peaked at #5.

The Dave Matthews Band comes in at #10 with a greatest hits compilation, but this one has a twist: the songs featured on the album were chosen by the fans on the band’s website. There are two discs in this release, one compiled from the group’s studio recordings and a live disc of previously unreleased material.

Other albums already familiar with the Top 10 include Disney’s “Hannah Montana” soundtrack, Birdman & L’il Wayne’s “Like Father, Like Son,” and Justin Timberlake’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds.”

Next week’s new releases include a new release from Jay-Z, a greatest hits compilation from U2, a posthumous release from Tupac, a Cirque du Soleil/Beatles hybrid, and a debut album from Ex-”Idol” Chris Daughtry.
