Aly Raisman may have lost out on winning an all-around medal in the Olympic women’s gymnastics by the narrowest of margins on Thursday, but she was able to keep her game face.
“I was just trying to think positive of it,” Aly told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush in London, of staying strong when she saw the scoreboard change. “It’s hard when you see your name tied with the other girl, and then you look up again and you see your name in fourth place. But I was just trying to think about how much of an honor it was to be in the all-around competition and still, fourth in the world is so amazing.”
Aly and Russia’s Aliya Mustafina tied for bronze on Thursday, but the way the tiebreaker works is the lowest score of the four events gets tossed out, giving the Russian Olympian a slight edge over American Aly.
“I still feel like I got it. I know that I did that the best that I could,” the Olympian told Billy. “It is what it is, but I still am really proud and happy with how I did.”
Fellow American Gabby Douglas picked up gold in the all-around division and Aly said she was proud of her teammate.
“I’m really happy because I’m still an Olympic champion and I’m really happy for Gabby,” she added.
Aly didn’t get to see her folks immediately after the competition, but she said they shared comforting words.
“On the phone they were really supportive and I know they were really proud of me,” she said.
