‘The Originals’: Leah Pipes On Klaus & Cami; Christmas At The Mikaelsons’

Cami O’Connell is spending the holidays with the Mikaelsons on
“The Originals.”

After being held prisoner by Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) sire,
Lucien (Andrew Lees), and then finding herself a hostage of the original hybrid’s ex,
Aurora (Rebecca Breeds), Leah Pipes’ character could use the safe haven the supernatural family can provide.

But could the close quarters mean more exploration into what’s going on with Klaus and Cami? Access Hollywood turned to Leah
to find out more about that exact subject, as well as to get some details about just how festive the Mikaelsons will
be as they try to have a nice little holiday amid the drama, pressure and
backstabbing that has come with the prophecy.

AccessHollywood.com: Why do you think Cami went to sleep instead of perhaps letting a moment happen [with Klaus, in last week’s episode]?
Leah Pipes:
I think she was actually really exhausted. … I had the same
question on the day, of like, why wouldn’t she just stay up a little longer? I mean, it seems like something might happen
here. … But I think she really was — you know how when you get so tired, you’re
like, ‘I literally can’t keep my eyes open, I don’t know what day it is’? She
probably hadn’t slept in a really long time. I don’t think she could’ve gotten
really good sleep at Lucien’s house — it just is too creepy. And then she gets
abducted by some crazy ex, so she hasn’t slept in a while.

Access: Do you think what happened in last week’s episode is
sort of making her really have to think about how she feels about Klaus?
Leah:
I think she is kind of always thinking about how she feels about Klaus.
When you have a complicated relationship with someone – especially if you’re an
intellectual like she is – you really try to wrap your mind around it and make
sense of it, So I think she does kind of do that frequently.

Access: Perhaps the word I should have used was come to some
‘conclusions’ about how she feels about Klaus.
Leah:
No, I don’t think so. … Yeah, maybe. I think she’s come to the conclusion
that this person, in a world where it’s hard to trust people, she can really, really trust
him and he has her best interest at heart and even when he was sort of putting
on a show for Aurora to pacify her by saying, ‘Oh, this lowly therapist, why
would you be jealous of her?’ she knew that he was doing that for her benefit
and to protect her and she was on the same page as him. I think, in a weird
way, yeah, it was a growing moment for their relationship (laughs). Aurora
brought them closer together.

Access: The photos from this
week’s episode reveal Cami is [there] for Christmas. What is a Mikaelson
Christmas holiday like this year — in 2015?
Leah:
Actually… like every family Christmas. It reminds me a little of my
family Christmas. It’s a little complicated, but everyone comes together in the
end (laughs).

Access: With Cami over for Christmas, are we going to
finally start to see them explore the romantic side of their relationship?
Leah:
I think you’ve been seeing them explore the romantic side of their
relationship for three seasons now, they just won’t admit it to themselves.
There is something there. It’s romantic and the things that he said to her at
the end of last season were romantic and her coming to him at the end of the
first season after she thought he lost his baby and lost everything and wanted
to be there for him was romantic. These two people really, really, really care
for each other and I think are attracted to each other. But the Christmas thing
— I actually think it was just timing. Cami happened to be staying at the
house at that point because she just can’t go on her own right now because
she’ll get abducted again, potentially, so she has to stay at the Mikaelson
house for a little while.

Access: Is there mistletoe?
Leah:
Is there mistletoe at the Mikaelson house? Uh, you’ll have to watch and
see. They did a lot of decorating, so I’m sure there’s mistletoe somewhere
(laughs).

WATCH: Phoebe Tonkin On Christmas With The Mikaelsons On ‘The Originals’

Access: [Is there a Christmas play on words with] Klaus’ name in this
episode (like Santi-Klaus or Santa Klaus)?
Leah:
I don’t want to give it away…

Nathan Parsons as Jackson, Phoebe Tonkin as Hayley, Daniel Gillies as Elijah, Joseph Morgan as Klaus, Leah Pipes as Cami and Claire Holt as Rebekah in ‘The Originals’ Season 3 midseason finale — ‘Savior’

Access: It would be cute if they said it to Hope. So, moving on… I have to ask you about the revelation last week about Cami’s past. Did you know that that happened, or was that something that you found out about and it helped inform you a little more?
Leah:
Yeah, I found it out when I was reading the script, but I think it makes sense. She’s a tough cookie… In Season 1, when she saw that Marcel was under attack, her first instinct is to grab a beer bottle and smash it in Papa Tunde’s face, and so it’s like, she’s obviously done this before. That’s kind of her go to. And then she smashed a bottle when she was – the guy baby sitting with her at Lucien’s, the babysitter guy — she smashed a bottle in his face, so I couldn’t say I was surprised.

Access: You mention Papa Tunde – I was talking to Joseph [Morgan] the other week and he was saying that that is the character he’d most like to see come back, even though Papa Tunde is no longer in the world of the living. Who would you most like to see come back on the show, dead or alive?
Leah
: Easy — Genevieve. Genevieve needs to come back. She was for sure the best. A — the actress who played her, Elyse [Levesque], was just so lovely, and so talented, but I love the dynamic that Genevieve had with Klaus and she was so vulnerable, but at the same time, so fierce. Yeah, I would love to see her come back.

Access: Finally, let me ask you about Jason Dohring’s character, Det. Kinney, who we haven’t seen in a while. Are we going to get to see Cami help him through [now that he’s discovered the supernatural world and been tortured by Lucien]? He’s in a bad way, and boy, was his mind blown.
Leah:
Yeah, she understands where he’s coming from too in a way that no one else can because this is sort of the position she was in all Season 1, and [she] feels for him, feels actual true compassion and empathy because she’s been there, so I think she feels a certain amount of responsibility for dragging him into this world.

“The Originals” midseason finale airs Thursday at 9/8c, after “The Vampire Diaries” on The CW.
