Oscar 2011 Snubs & Surprises! Julianne Moore & Andrew Garfield Snubbed!

The 83rd Annual Academy Award nominations were announced Tuesday morning with some surprising nominees – but not all of this year’s favorite big screen performances and films were honored with a nomination.

Oscar morning’s biggest surprise was “Winter’s Bone,” the small indie film starring Jennifer Lawrence about a girl living in the Ozarks searching for her father amid a sea family secrets and lies. Jennifer scored a nomination for Best Actress and co-star John Hawkes (previously best known for playing “Sol Star” in “Deadwood,” and the small role of “Lennon” in the final season of ABC’s “Lost”) was nominated in the Supporting Acting category. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay.

Aussie Jacki Weaver received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in the little-seen “Animal Kingdom,” a film about the activities of a Melbourne crime family. It’s a nod that was pushed for hard around Hollywood by the Australian Film Institute. She had also recently received a Golden Globe nod for the role.

Javier Bardem also woke up to good news with a nomination for “Biutiful,” the Alejandro Gonzalenz Inarritu-directed Spanish-language film overlooked by many early season awards shows, which was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Julia Roberts was very vocal around Hollywood in her support for the film and Javier’s performance – did her kind words help sway voters?

There were also some major snubs this morning with many Golden Globe nominees and winners failing to get any Oscar love.

“The Fighter” earned seven nominations with acting honors in every category except Lead Actor. Mark Wahlberg, who earned a Globe nom, was not recognized for his role as real life boxer Micky Ward. He was however nominated as a producer on the film. Other lead actors snubbed this year include Ryan Gosling for “Blue Valentine,” and Paul Giamatti for “Barney’s Version,” the latter of which won the Best Actor Golden Globe last week.

In the Lead Actress category, Julianne Moore was left out for her role in “The Kids Are All Right,” although co-stars Annette Benning and Mark Ruffalo were both honored. Halle Berry’s role in “Frankie and Alice” also failed to earn enough ballots from Academy voters.

“The Social Network” scored eight nominations, but Andrew Garfield – star of the upcoming “Spider-Man” reboot – failed to get a nomination after previously being honored with a Golden Globe nod. Other Supporting Actor snubs include Michael Douglas for his role in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” (a role for which he had previously won an Oscar 23 years ago).

“Black Swan’s” Mila Kunis, who was nominated for a Globe, was not recognized for her role opposite Oscar favorite Natalie Portman in the Supporting Actress category. Barbara Hershey was also overlooked for the same film in this category.

Other notable snubs include director Christopher Nolan for “Inception,” “The Town” for Best Picture and songwriter Diane Warren in the Best Original Song category for “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me” from “Burlesque.” Warren, a client of the late publicist Ronni Chasen, won the Globe last week for the song.

Notable surprise nominees from the music industry this year include the British singer Dido and her brother Rollo Armstrong, who wrote the lyrics to the Oscar-nominated song “If I Rise” from “127 Hours,” and Nine Inch Nails lead singer Trent Reznor, who wrote the original score for “The Social Network” (for which he recently won the Golden Globe).
