The 85th Annual Academy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning with serious snubs as some of this year’s favorite big screen performances and films failed to earn nominations.
“Argo” scored 11 nominations, but director and actor Ben Affleck was left out of the running.
Fellow director Kathryn Bigelow, whose “Zero Dark Thirty” nabbed five nominations – including Best Picture – won’t be returning to the podium (she previously won for “The Hurt Locker” in 2009) as she did not received a congratulatory call.
Many thought Leonardo DiCaprio, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as plantation owner Calvin Candie in “Django Unchained,” would get a nomination, but he too was left out. Co-star Christoph Watlz did however earn a Supporting Actor nomination.
Fellow Globe nominees John Hawkes from “The Sessions” and Richard Gere from “Arbitrage” were also passed over by the Academy.
Many thought Christopher Nolan might earn a nomination for “The Dark Knight Rises,” but he was also left off the coveted list.
Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” was awarded with five noms on Thursday, but the film’s helmer was passed over.
In the writing categories, “Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “Looper” were left out of the nominations.
Some interesting Oscar firsts occurred this year concerning nominees’ ages, with “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star Quvenzhane Wallis, 9, being the youngest Lead Actress nominee ever and “Amour” star Emmanuelle Riva, 85, being the oldest Lead Actress nominee ever.
