Paris Hilton Talks Bling Ring Cameo & ‘Very Scary’ Real Life Burglaries: ‘It Feels Like Nowhere Is Safe’

Paris Hilton lost over $2 million worth of personal belongings as the victim of a celebrity home burglary ring in 2008 — events which inspired Sofia Coppola’s upcoming crime drama, “The Bling Ring.”

The heiress, 32, makes a cameo in the film and allowed Sofia to shoot scenes inside of her Los Angeles-area home in order to lend more reality to the story.

“It was very invasive what they did to me,” Paris told Access Hollywood at “The Bling Ring” premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday, when asked why she wanted to be involved with the movie. “I think it’s really important that Sofia actually showed what happened and how serious this was and how serious the burglaries [were that] they did to everybody.”

The burglaries took place during 2008 and 2009, when a group of teens entered the homes of Paris, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson, Audrina Patridge and others, and stole millions of dollars’ worth of items.

Paris said learning her private residence had been entered by strangers – on multiple occasions — was traumatizing.

“It was really scary to know that people were in my home and going through my things, taking all the things I would never be able to replace,” she said. “And it just made me scared to be in my house alone because you never know who is going to come in — especially if they got in so many times.

“And I live in a gated community, so it was just very scary,” she added. “It feels like nowhere is really safe.”

Ironically, Paris – one of the first notable reality TV stars (she starred in “The Simple Life” with Nicole Richie from 2003 – 2007) – said she believes today’s celebrity-crazed culture can be attributed in part to the rise of reality shows.

“I think these kids just wanted a piece of everyone’s life and they felt the way to get it was by stealing it. So it just shows what all the kids are focusing on, which is, yeah, reality television,” she said. “I think it’s really scary the time girls are being raised in and what they think values are, and the fact that they thought they could just break into peoples’ houses and have their lives.”

Adding, “It’s just scary that it’s become such a celebrity obsession.”

“The Bling Ring,” which stars Emma Watson, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang and Claire Julien, hits theaters on June 14.
