Producers Robert Kirkman & David Alpert Talk Scariness Of ‘Outcast,’ Hint At ‘Waking Dead’ S7

“The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman has a
new show premiering on Friday night — psychological horror drama
“Outcast.”

“We filmed the pilot I think, not last December, but
the December before and I started developing the thing between ‘Walking Dead’
Season 1 and Season 2 and yeah, it’s really been a slow burn for me, even
though for a lot of people, they’re like, ‘The comic just came out and the show’s
happening,'” Robert said, when AccessHollywood.com spoke to him earlier
this week at the show’s premiere at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery
(coincidentally, the same place “TWD” Season 1 premiered).

“I’ve been working on this for years, so yeah, it’s
great to finally share it with the world and get to see what people think of
it,” he added.

Airing on Cinemax, the series stars Patrick Fugit
(“Almost Famous,” “Gone Girl”) as Kyle Barnes, a man whose
life has been affected by demonic possessions around him, and who is now trying
to live a private and quiet life.

According to David Alpert, also an executive producer of
“Outcast,” the Cinemax series has a different tone to the other show
he and Kirkman are executive producers on – “The Walking Dead.”

“I think ‘Outcast’ is pretty awesome. It’s an entirely
different type of storytelling, but really what we’re looking at is what
happens the day after, right? It’s sort of like — you look at ‘The Exorcist,’
one of the greatest movies of all time, and this girl’s been totally possessed
by a demon, they go through this awful exorcism, her head spins around, she
goes through this nasty thing with the cross, and the next day, what? She’s
supposed to go back to school? Where’d the demon go? Those types of questions
— that’s what we’re going to answer here in ‘Outcast,'” Alpert told
Access at the show’s premiere.

Patrick’s character, Kyle, is viewers’ window into the show
as he starts to venture into the world more and look into some of the things
that affected his past.

“Patrick’s great,” Kirkman said of the
“Outcast’s” leading man. “Patrick really embodies this
character, brings a lot of warmth to the role, a lot of hope, a lot of optimism
that I think is buried in the subtext of this character. It’s something that’s
not very present in the opening episode, but over time, as the series
progresses, you’ll get to see this guy open up and become more of a complete
human being and I think Patrick’s going to be handling that stuff
expertly.”

With demonic possessions and exorcisms in the show’s first
episode, expect the series to be a frightening one, Kirkman said.

“The show’s going to be very scary, but it’s not just
going to jump scares, it’s not just going to be exorcisms. There’s going be
other aspects to this show that are haunting and terrifying and really stick
with you and we’re really hoping to achieve a level of psychological horror
that isn’t just dependent on the action and the jump scares,” Kirkman
said. “We’ll see if we actually pull that off. I don’t know, but we are
shooting for that and hopefully it’ll be a very scary show, with a lot of drama
and a lot of heart.”

Kirkman and Alpert are also at work on Season 7 of “The
Walking Dead,” which returns to AMC this fall.

“It’s been great,” Kirkman said of how Season 7 is
going. “Everyone is happy to be back to work and the material that we’re
doing – Scott [Gimple, ‘TWD’ showrunner] and the writer’s room, and everybody
involved, I guess including myself… we’re happy with how things are going and I
think that coming off of that Season 6 cliffhanger, we’re really going to be
paying that off in the big way because we have to, you know? We gotta put our
money where our mouth is and make sure that we stick the landing and I’m pretty
confident that we do. So it’s going to be a great season.”

AccessHollywood.com also asked if fans of “TWD”
can expect a resolution right away when the show returns.

“Yeah, right away. I mean, I don’t know how quickly
we’ll get a resolution minute wise, but it will definitely be in the first
episode. We’re not going to be teasing that out anywhere past that,” he
said.

“Outcast” premieres June 3 at 10 PM ET/PT on
Cinemax.
