Reese Witherspoon is speaking out following her weekend arrest for disorderly conduct.
“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said,” the 37-year-old actress said in a statement to Access Hollywood.
The Oscar winner and husband Jim Toth were stopped in Atlanta and Toth was charged for an alleged DUI.
According to the police report (per The Associated Press), during Toth’s field sobriety test, the actress got out of the car and approached her husband and the state trooper saying that she was a “U.S. citizen” and that she was allowed to “stand on American ground.”
When the trooper arrested Witherspoon she told him, “Do you know my name?” followed by, “You’re about to find out who I am… You’re about to be on national news.”

The actress explained that she was frightened during the incident, but apologized for her actions.
“It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse,” her statement continued. “I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”

Also on Monday, Reese was not present at the junket for “Mud,” where she was expected to do interviews with the media.
