‘Reign’: 6 Things To Know About What’s Ahead

“Reign” is about to get another royal in the ranks when the mother of Adelaide Kane’s Mary, Queen of Scots, comes to court later this season. And that was just one of the exciting developments Executive Producer Laurie McCarthy shared new details about with AccessHollywood.com.

And, from a foreboding warning about character fates, to some good news on the “Greith” front, Laurie gave us several tantalizing teases about what’s to come on “Reign.”

New Details About The Upcoming Appearance By Mary’s Mother!: Last year, it was announced that former “Private Practice” actress Amy Brenneman will portray Mary of Guise, and Executive Producer Laurie McCarthy told AccessHollywood.com it will be an “extraordinary episode.” “She comes to French court and her entry line is, ‘French court has gone to hell!’ And she takes it in hand in a pretty firm way.” Amy’s episode airs in March, and fans can expect a match-up of mothers. “Without giving anything away, in 113 — which is an enormous episode for us — she and Catherine kind of go toe-to-toe and they have a speech about what it means to trade your children for power. … Catherine, for all of her flaws, would die for her children. Mary of Guise, sent her daughter far away, hoping for the best,” Laurie said. “But, in defense to her, she was the mother of an only child who was a female heir and she has been ruling a country while this child grew up, so… she’s badass”

On Aylee’s Death & What’s Next!: “It was an incredibly difficult decision, and in no small part because I really adore Jenessa Grant,” Laurie said of killing off one of Mary’s ladies in waiting in a recent episode. “But I felt like it’s a show where… the stakes have to be high and they have to be high for our primary characters. And in fact, the stakes were high for our primary characters. Her’s was the first death. It won’t be the last.”

Kenna Is Down, But She’s Not Out!: “She’s scrappy,” Laurie said of the King’s youngest mistress, who made a move for a higher position, only to see herself out maneuvered. “Kenna came to a relationship with the king with some naivete and she learns not only [do] you have political intrigue, but her heart gets a little more sophisticated as well and before the season ends, she goes on a rather extraordinary journey that ends with a surprising union for her.”

Love Will Continue To Blossom For “Greith”!: Expect to see more of fan favorite couple Greer and kitchen boy Leith, Laurie said. “For the latter half of the season… the characters who’ve been a little bit in the background, will be serviced more. … We’ll get to spend more time with Kenna, we’ll get to spend more time with Greer and Leith and [explore] the complications of loving someone way below your station and it’s a love that will endure.”

More Characters Are On The Way: “You’ll meet more representatives of Scotland. People who are closer to power than [Mary’s] mother even, who will come to court and they may be friend, they may be foe, they may even be family,” Laurie said. And, expect more developments with Catherine too. “You’ll see someone very surprising rise and take Catherine’s throne for a period of time and an incredible twist for the king,” she added.

What’s In The Woods?: Beyond exploring more to do with the girl in the walls — Clarissa — “Reign” will be putting a focus on what’s going on outside the walls of the castle. “Is it a creature? Is it a man? Is there weight to the pagan superstition?” Laurie said of what will be explored in the coming episodes.

“Reign” airs Thursday nights at 9/8c on The CW.
