Ricky Gervais: I Won’t Be Attending The Golden Globes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will co-host the Golden Globes on Sunday, but Ricky Gervais, who hosted the show the last few years, won’t be in attendance.

“I’ve got to fly back,” the Brit said on Wednesday afternoon while promoting his new show, “Derek,” at the Netflix portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Tour 2013 in Pasadena, Calif.

“I start filming the new Muppet movie next week,” Ricky said, referring to the franchise he is taking over from Jason Segel.

Looking back on his headline-making tenure as the host of the awards show, where he took now infamous jabs at the expense of celebrities, including Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson and Angelina Jolie, Ricky said it was a good time.

“I enjoyed the last three Golden Globes immensely,” he said. “To be the most feared man in Hollywood for three hours was such fun.”

But while it was fun, he said he quickly left it behind and started back up writing original material.

“That’s such a tiny part of my life. I literally treat it like three hours work. Do you know what I mean?” he said. “As big and global as it became — usually you have to actually murder somebody to get that many column inches — but, you know, win, lose or draw, the next day I was writing.”

The Golden Globes airs live on January 13 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT on NBC. “Derek” premieres late Spring/Summer on Netflix.
