Ricky Gervais Issues Statement After Flap Erupts His Over Comments Regarding Hosting Globes Next Year

Ricky Gervais had a little explaining to do after a magazine article came out in the United Kingdom, with claims from the comedian that organizers were interested in having him back as the host of the Golden Globes in 2012.

The British funnyman, who created a stir of controversy following a host of jokes about Hollywood at the January awards show ceremony, revealed on Tuesday evening that it was an executive at NBC, the network which airs the show, who suggested he return, and not the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“At no point did I talk to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Ricky told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday. “I’m absolutely sure they don’t want me back.”

In a “Golden Globes Diary” for Britain’s Heat Magazine that sparked Ricky’s newest comments, the Brit originally wrote, “organizers asked me to consider a third year.”

Shortly after the claim hit the newsstands, HFPA president Phil Berk, issued a statement of his own.

“We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky,” he said.

On Ricky’s own blog, though, he offered the full version of what happened regarding his potential third hosting gig at the Globes.

“The TV show organizers said they were happy with everything and asked me to not rule out a third gig. However, it is not entirely up to them. The Hollywood Foreign Press and various other committees need to meet and agree,” he wrote. “I have no idea if they want me back again. It depends whether they care about fifty delicate egos in the room or the 200 million people watching at home who want a laugh. Also, even if they did want me back, at the moment I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t do it. But I’ll tell you this. If they do invite me back and I accept, I’m going to pull exactly the same s*** again or even worse.”
