The singer, who was nicknamed the “Velvet Teddy Bear” during his stint on “Idol,” lost 100 pounds from his more than 400 pound frame back in 2006 when he adhered to a program from the Duke Diet and Fitness Center.

“We’re from Alabama and we love to eat,” he told “Today’s” Meredith Veira at the time, speaking about his struggles with food.

Ruben was put on a 1,200-1,500 calorie diet a day.

After he left the center, he became a vegetarian for a time.

The new season of “The Biggest Loser” premieres October 8 at 9/8c on NBC.
