Sandra Bullock On ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’ Casting Switch & George Clooney’s Support

Sandra Bullock takes on the role of a campaign advisor in her upcoming film, “Our Brand Is Crisis.”

The role was initially written to be played by a man (the film is based on the 2005 documentary of the same name), but when the Oscar winner read it, she knew she wanted the part.

“[My agent and I] were looking for things to do and I couldn’t find anything that excited me, and she says, ‘Well, this script is wonderful.’ I read it and it was amazing,” Sandra told Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Sandy called up producers Grant Heslov and her “Gravity” co-star George Clooney (a producer on the film), and asked if she could have the role.

“They said yes. I’ve known them both long before any of us were working. We’ve sort of been side by side climbing that ladder,” she said. “It made me really happy that they weren’t too precious about it — which they could have been because they spent a lot of time developing this project. But it was literally a phone call and they went, ‘All right, let’s do it.'”

For his part, George said changing the lead character’s gender was simple.

“We thought, ‘Why not?’ It makes sense. And really it was about a two-day re-write to make if for her,” he said. “We really didn’t have to change that much.”

The actor said he hopes more male roles are made available to women.

“I think that that should be something we look at in other films as well,” he told Scott.

“Our Brand Is Crisis,” which also stars Billy Bob Thornton, hits theaters on October 30.
