Sara Ramirez Is ‘Really Proud’ Of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Co-Stars’ Singing Skills On Upcoming ‘Music Event’

Sara Ramirez might be a Tony Award winning singer, but the actress said she’s not the only Seattle Grace doctor belting it out tonight on the “Grey’s Anatomy: The Music Event.”

The actress, who plays Dr. Callie Torres on the hit ABC drama, stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Thursday and gave Kit Hoover and guest co-host Star Jones the scoop on tonight’s highly anticipated episode.

“We’re calling it the music event,” she said. “The word ‘musical’ can often times be misleading. People think, ‘Fosse, jazz hands…’ and all of that is fabulous. It’s just that music has always been a part of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ It’s helped tell the story; it’s like another character.

“And so, it was quite organic to use songs from the first three seasons to now tell the story again, but through the characters, [and] also through Callie’s state, as we’ll find out tonight,” she continued, referring to last week’s dramatic car accident. “It was very exciting, [‘Grey’s’ creator] Shonda [Rhimes] has been wanting to do this since the show started.”

On tonight’s episode – which begins with a bloodied unconscious Callie on the hood of a car – cast members will sing some of the show’s most memorable songs from over the years, including “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol and “How to Save a Life” by The Fray. The bands’ featured presence on the show helped launch them to stardom.

The 35-year-old actress explained that viewers would be surprised by how many of her co-stars have gifted voices of their own.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase some peoples’ talents,” she continued. “I think the surprise is about the people we don’t know who can sing… We have great voices in our cast, I’m really proud of everybody.”

Sara took home a Tony Award in 2005 for best featured actress in a musical for her role as The Lady of the Lake in “Spamalot,” yet still, the actress said she gets jitters before performing live.

“I get nervous every time [I sing] because I care. I think the day that you’re not nervous, is the day you should start doing something else,” she explained.

In addition to tonight’s “Music Event,” Sarah is embarking on her own musical career with an EP available on iTunes. The actress co-wrote three of the four songs on the EP, including “The Story,” which will be performed on tonight’s show.

The “Grey’s Anatomy: The Music Event” airs on ABC at 9 PM ET.
