It was in May 2010 that Sarah Ferguson was embroiled in perhaps the biggest scandal of her controversy-filled life, when she was caught attempting to sell access to her ex-husband, Prince Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew.
“I think that I was taken to my knees in May of 2010,” the original Fergie told Access Hollywood of the scandal. “I simply had no answers, I had no belief left in me, I had no energy left in me. I had lost my way.
“I remember reaching out to Oprah and saying you know, ‘Please, can you help me?’” Sarah continued of her request for help from the TV mogul, something she did while on the tour for her Helping Hand Books, a series for children. “And Oprah sent me to [life coach] Martha Beck.”
Sarah began to receive advice from her new life coach, but when the Duchess’ sister contacted her from Australia, passing along an invite to go on a cooking show Down Under, she turned back to Oprah for help, help that eventually led to “Finding Sarah,” her new show on The Oprah Winfrey Network, which premieres Sunday at 9 PM EST.
“I didn’t know what to do, so I asked [for] advice from Oprah and Oprah and I were friends and Oprah didn’t really ask me about the documentary series because she didn’t want to mix it and then the next thing was that Oprah said, ‘If you’re going to do anything, do it with the OWN network,’” Sarah recounted to Access.
Sarah’s new six-episode docuseries offers viewers a glimpse into the Duchess’ struggle to find herself, a journey that takes her back to her own painful past and also pairs her up for advice with Dr. Phil, Suze Orman and Martha Beck.
On the other side now, Sarah said her daughters, Princess Eugenie and Beatrice, are thrilled with how things all worked out.
“I think that the girls are thrilled with Oprah, Dr. Phil and Suzie Orman. I know the minute they’ll see Oprah, they’ll just hug her and just never let go of her because she’s really saved their mum,” Sarah said. “What Oprah’s done is given me the tools by these wonderful people in order for me to be the mother without having to be the one who feels worthless and all these other kinds of things.
“The girls often say to me, ‘Mum, you’re the only person who doesn’t know she’s [as] lovable as you. We all love you, we know you, we know exactly who you are,’” Sarah added.
Sarah has a close relationship with her daughters, but she is also good friends with her ex – Prince Andrew.
“I live with Prince Andrew when I’m in England and the four of us are a total unit, and on Sunday we had tea before I left and we all four were so together,” she recounted. “It was just extraordinary and I think it was huge and Prince Andrew said just remember, ‘I’m only a call away,’” she recounted.
