After more than 12 years on “Saturday Night Live,” Seth Meyers gave his final sign-off this weekend.
The writer/comedian, who joined the iconic sketch show in 2001, is leaving to take over “Late Night” hosting duties from Jimmy Fallon, as Jimmy moves on to take over the “Tonight Show” from Jay Leno.
Supporting Seth as he said his final farewell on Saturday night’s Weekend Update segment were four of his former “SNL” co-stars – Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen, Andy Samberg and Bill Hader (who was in character as Seth’s club-loving biggest fan/would-be husband, Stefon).
New Weekend Update a co-anchor Cecily Strong became emotional when saying her goodbye to Seth, and Seth seemed to be a little choked up as well as he thanked his “SNL” family.
“It is my last show, and I just want to say that being out here with my co-anchors and my friends and my husband (referencing Stefon) is the perfect way to end,” he said. “This is the job I always wanted and I had the best time and met the best people…. Thank you very much! Take us out, Cecily.”
“SNL” writer Colin Jost will now join Cecily as co-anchor at the Weekend Update desk.
“Late Night with Seth Meyers” premieres February 24 on NBC.
