Shakira & Longtime Boyfriend Split After 11 Years

Shakira and longtime boyfriend Antonio de la Rua have separated.

“Since August 2010, we made a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship,” the former couple wrote in a joint statement on the singer’s website. “We view this period of separation as temporary and as a time of individual growth as we continue to be partners in our business and professional lives.”

The son of the former president of Argentina will still work with the Colombian singing sensation conducting her business affairs. As a couple, the two are considered golden, often referred to as the Posh and Becks of South America.

“During our almost 11 years together we have loved each other deeply, taken care of each other and stood by one another. They have been the most wonderful years of our lives, and thanks to that love and the respect that we share for one another we have been an exceptional couple and partners,” Shakira and Antonio’s statement said.

In October, Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos asked the singer why she and Antonio hadn’t walked down the aisle yet.

“I think that you got to keep men on their toes right? So, when you get married I’m afraid that things change a little bit and they relax too much and… no, I’d rather be the eternal girlfriend and keep him alert,” Shakira said at the time.

Adding, “I don’t think that marriage… defines the state of a relationship… I travel all the time and I don’t think that I need to be officially protected under [the] roof of marriage to be with him.”
