Shawn Stockman’s ‘Sing-Off’ Blog: The Power Of Perseverance

Hey guys!! Feeling a little sick today. But I have to keep things going. You guys got a chance to see “The Sing-Off” on Monday night and it was the best yet!

As much as I’ve become a fan watching all of these groups perform, I do unfortunately have to come to the understanding that only one group can win it all! Although we had to send another group home, it doesn’t in any way determine their ultimate fate!

You can apply that with many scenarios in life!

It’s not about how you start, but how you finish. And I am a witness to encountering roads I never would have thought I would have traveled!

All of the groups on this show deserve a shot in the spotlight because I believe they are that good. And I’ve been most inspired in certain examples by people who were not crowned champion!

I remember about 12 years ago, a good friend of ours who played NBA basketball for the Phoenix Suns at the time invited my group and myself to a game. Unfortunately, the Suns lost. After the game, we went back to the locker room to hang out for a bit and thank our friend for the tickets.

Not really concerning ourselves with the loss, we were just glad to have been there and to check out our homie in action. We were told by one of his coaches he was in the facility’s practice gym. We find our friend, and he’s still in his uniform, still sweating from the game just played, shooting free throws, lay ups, and doing suicides up and down the court. We watched him do this for 15 minutes without saying one word. He lost the game, and he felt that it was his fault being the leader of the team.

I was amazed at his dedication, his refusal to accept defeat, and his tenacity to want to keep pushing himself even after the game was over! He even apologized to us for losing the game, which we thought was ridiculous and unnecessary! This is a man who never won an NBA championship after 16 seasons but to this day is regarded as one of the best power forwards the league has ever seen. He’s always been quite the colorful character and a really good basketball analyst, and an all-around good guy, despite some controversies in his life. The friend I’m speaking of is none other than Mr. Charles Barkley!

I never said this to Charles, but watching him after losing the game that night taught me so much! No matter what the outcome of an event in your life, it does not have to be what your legacy is! As long as you’re breathing, you have another chance at greatness, even if it isn’t the way you may have pictured it to be!

Life has many twists and turns. No one can predict how it could end up. I’ve said this to every group that has been on the show this year. No matter what happens after this show, DON’T EVER STOP DOING WHAT YOU LOVE!

It could lead to so many other opportunities that, if you stopped doing it, you would have never experienced! If my group just laid down and died after so many people told us we were finished, over with, outdated, and so on, I would not have been able to be on this show, and would not have had the most enlightening and beautiful experiences I’ve had!

Later in the day yesterday, I was feeling a little better, getting ready to do “Dancing with the Stars.”
