Sleepy Hollow Recap: Season 1, Episode 5 — John Doe

Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills faced off with another Horseman of the Apocalypse, a plague and Middle English in the latest episode of Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow.”

Here’s the blow-by-blow account of what happened:

The Forest: A girl is collecting leaves as a young boy about her age — in clothing from the 1500s — watches. She invites him to chase her. He does and as she disappears in the forest he becomes the one pursued — by a Horseman! As the boy reaches the road an RV drives by and the Horseman vanishes.

Ichabod’s New Cabin, Sleepy Hollow: Ichabod Crane is a motel resident no more. Just as he starts to get comfortable in his new abode (with bullet holes on the wall they plan to “spackle” over) and begins to unpack the grocery bags he and Lt. Abbie Mills walked in with, a voice comes over her radio. Someone has been found unconscious, but breathing, at Market and 5th. She volunteers to check it out. Ichabod volunteers to tag along.

Market & 5th Street, Sleepy Hollow: Abbie’s ex-boyfriend, Morales, explains a boy was spotted stumbling down the street before he passed out. Now on a gurney, Ichabod takes a look at the youngster. The boy’s veins are blackening. He wakes up just long enough for Ichabod to realize the child (in 1500s period garb as he is the boy from the opening sequence) is speaking Middle English.

Sheriff’s Station, Sleepy Hollow: Back at the station, Abbie, Ichabod and Capt. Frank Irving discuss the youngster they are calling a John Doe. There are no leads on the child’s identity, but the Capt. has called in the CDC. He advises Ichabod to brush up on his Chaucer to question the kid.

Morales speaks to the Captain, expressing his concerns about Crane. Capt. Irving wisely brings up Morales’ romantic past with Abbie. “Is that gonna cause a problem, Morales?” he asks. “No, sir,” Morales replies.

Medical Facility, Sleepy Hollow: Ichabod interviews the youngster. His name is Thomas and he’s from Roanoke — as in the lost colony of Roanoke that disappeared without a trace in the late 1500s. Ichabod and Abbie set out to investigate. Capt. Irving tells them Thomas’ disease is spreading to others and an EMT has just been infected. Ichabod suspects it might be a plague!

Witches Spring Trail, Sleepy Hollow: As it turns out, he can not only translate Middle English, but Ichabod can track Thomas’ trail too. He learned those skills fox hunting. “My father was a nobleman,” Ichabod tells Abbie. “I had a rather regal upbringing. It’s one thing I’m pleased to have left behind.”

The trail ends at a lake in the forest. Ichabod finds a special pathway for them to walk across the lake. Reaching the other side, IchAbbie (Ichabod plus Abbie) realize they are now in the lost colony of Roanoke! All the colonists are infected, but don’t appear sick.

The colonists were cursed by the Horseman of Pestilence, but were led to this location after the death of Virginia Dare (the very first child born in North America), by Virginia’s ghost, a colonist tells the pair. The place protects them from the virus’ lethal properties. So, when Thomas left the area (in the opening sequence), he must have taken the plague with him. “We must prevent this will all costs,” Ichabod says when he learns the Horseman of Pestilence will come to Sleepy Hollow and beyond if the plague spreads.

Medical Facility, Sleepy Hollow: Ichabod is now infected and the CDC men sedate him.

Katrina’s Purgatory: Unconscious, Ichabod is transported to a purgatory where he sees his wife Katrina. They embrace and kiss. She encourages him to fight when he is pulled by a demon, or something, away from her.

Medical Facility, Sleepy Hollow: Morales answers a call from someone who claims to be from the history department of Oxford Merton College. She confirms Crane is on sabbatical from the department, and on loan to law enforcement.

Medical Facility Chapel, Sleepy Hollow: Abbie prays for a sign. Dejected, she begins to leave the chapel, watching a woman bless herself with holy water at the entrance/exit. Abbie’s got it! The water in the lost colony must be the cure to the plague.

Capt. Irving suggests she can get Ichabod and Thomas out of the facility to save them (and maybe everyone else) by whisking them away as they are being transferred to another facility.

Witches Spring Trail, Sleepy Hollow: Sick Ichabod drags Thomas through the forest while recounting to Abbie how he saw Katrina in a purgatory. “I’m glad you fought your way out of it,” she says. But, he is having trouble fighting the plague. Thomas is dying and Ichabod is too. As Ichabod begins to feel faint, she injects him with something from a medical bag. “ What was that?” he asks. “Adrenaline,” she replies. “I like it,” he says with a wicked look in his eye. Ichabod, Abbie and Thomas cross the lake and enter the hidden colony while being chased by the Horseman.

The Lost Colony Of Roanoke: Ichabod and Thomas jump into a well just as the Horseman of Pestilence rides up to claim them. He’s too late. The water has saved the pair and he evaporates.

Witches Spring Trail, Sleepy Hollow: Abbie and Ichabod are transported back to the forest. They realize Thomas was lured into Sleepy Hollow to spread the plague. “You stopped him by having faith,” Ichabod tells Abbie, referring to the newest Horseman. “Your faith in being one of the witnesses allowed you to see what your eyes could not.” They two head home to prepare for their next challenge. “We will require much more than faith if and when the Horseman of Death returns,” he says.

A Lake, Sleepy Hollow: The Headless Horseman (of Death) exits the water with his axe, and rides through the forest.

“Sleepy Hollow” will return November 4 on Fox.
