‘Sons Of Anarchy’: Kurt Sutter On Casting Marilyn Manson & Courtney Love

Two new faces are headed to “Sons of Anarchy” – rockers Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love – and on Monday, Creator Kurt Sutter addressed casting the two musicians on his FX show.

“I tend to do this every season, I like to do some casting that’s a little bit outside the box, you know, from Stephen King to David Hasselhoff – we try to do stuff that’s fun,” Sutter said at the “SOA” panel at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour in Beverly Hills.

The FX showrunner said in the case of Marilyn, friendship helped lead the rocker to the part of Ron Tully, previously described by the network as a “white supremacist prison shot-caller who Jax [Charlie Hunnam’s character] uses to expand his power base.”

“Manson, I became friends with through some music buddies and he’s a huge fan of the show and that was him basically just wearing me down and we found a great role for him and he’s great,” Sutter said.

The “SOA” boss (and Nirvana fan) said he doesn’t know Love “that well,” but they met, “a few times” and she had an interest in being on the show.

“And then, we had this role of a school teacher and I thought, ‘Who better than Courtney Love?’ and so it sort of fits into our parameters of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ casting,” Sutter added.

“SOA” Season 7 premieres September 9 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.
