LONDON (June 9, 2007) — After being spotted together for the first time in years at the christening of Geri Halliwells baby Bluebell, rumors began swirling that Spice Girls were getting back together. While at least one of the girls confirms the multi-platinum fab five: Scary, Baby, Ginger, Sporty and Posh have been speaking about getting back together as a tour de force, dont set aside your ticket money just yet.
There has been discussions, Sporty, AKA Melanie Chisholm told the BBCs Something For the Weekend recently, but nothings been agreed at the moment.
While the girls may be talking, some UK newspapers have said Chisholm who is currently promoting her fourth solo album This Time in the UK, is the lone hold out of the bunch. Mel C furthered those rumors during her appearance on the weekend program.
I really, really like my life the way it is. Ive got my record out and its very special to me, she said. Ive always said I dont want to do it and in my heart of hearts Id rather leave it really but if the other four girls wanna do it, then I dont wanna be the one who stops it from being the complete five.
Though she offers some hopeful sentiments that the world could see the first reunion of all five girls in nearly a decade (Geri Ginger Halliwell left in 1998), Chisholm rules out anything more than new versions of their hits during potential performances.
I absolutely dont want to do new material cause I think that time has passed, she stated. If were gonna do it, it should be for nostalgia and it should be all the old stuff, everyone have a great time, put it to bed, finish it and then everyone stop asking me about it!
So what have the girls been up to since their last album in 2000?
Mel B/Scary/Melanie Brown: Currently resides in Los Angeles where she recently made headlines for dating Eddie Murphy. Even more headlines came for the woman who coined zig-a-zig-ah! when Murphy claimed he wasnt the father of her unborn child while promoting Dreamgirls earlier this year. Mel gave birth to that baby girl â? Angel Iris Murphy Brown in April
Mel C/Sporty/Melanie Chisholm: The second in command of the Spicies, Mel C has gone on to make four albums since the outfit went their separate ways in 2001. While most of her records weren’t released stateside, Chisholm had some major club circuit success with the dance single I Turn To You.
Geri/Ginger/Geri Halliwell: After leaving the group during a tour in 1998, Halliwell went on to lead a breast cancer awareness campaign for the U.N. Her first post-Spice Girls album Schizophonic was released stateside on Capitol Records, though failed to make the charts. Halliwell has since dropped two more discs in her native UK and most recently she gave birth to a daughter Bluebell Madonna. Victoria Beckham is one of the childs godmothers.
Emma Bunton/Baby: The once-pigtailed Spice Girl, Bunton too released three albums in her native England, though they were met with moderate success. She appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, the UK version of Dancing With the Stars, and most recently in a Prego sauce ad in the USA. She is currently expecting her first child.
Posh/Victoria Beckham: Although she sang very little in the Spicies and her solo career stalled after one album, Victoria Beckham managed to end up one of the wealthiest of the lot. She and husband, super soccer star David Beckham have become the it couple in Europe and Victoria has taken part in UK-aired documentaries which chronicled her daily life, not unlike what shell be bringing stateside to NBC later this year. She designed a line of jeans for Rock & Republic and has written a handful of books including her most recent, That Extra Half Inch: Hair, Heels & Everything In-between, which came out in the UK last October
