Tennis Star Martina Navratilova Battling Breast Cancer

Tennis icon Martina Navratilova is battling breast cancer. Navratilova told Access Hollywood Wednesday morning that she caught the cancer early and her prognosis is excellent.

“I had a routine mammogram in January, then a month later, they said, ‘No, we need a biopsy,’ the next day –boom! February 24 was my 9/11,” Navratilova told Access.

“I found out I have DCIS, which is a non-invasive form of breast cancer,” she said of her ductal carcinoma in situ caner, which is only located in her milk ducts and has not spread.

“The first words out of my doctor were, ‘Well, maybe you’ll need a mastectomy,’ and I’m like, ‘Wow, I don’t want to lose my boob!’” She explained. “As it turns out, only a lumpectomy and only radiation is necessary.”

The nine-time Wimbledon champion has undergone the lumpectomy and will start radiation therapy in May, which is expected to last six weeks.
