The Mindy Project Q&A: Mindy Kaling On Season 2’s Hair-Raising Engagement

We are just hours away from the return of TV’s funniest single girl comedy, “The Mindy Project.”

Season 2 finds Mindy Kaling’s character Mindy Lahiri (still sporting that short cropped hairdo) off in Haiti with her boyfriend Pastor Casey (Anders Holm). A surprise engagement in tonight’s episode has things definitely looking up in the doctor’s love life, but as Access Hollywood found out when we visited the set, her happiness won’t last for long… or that short hair.

Access Hollywood: Your hair is back so I’m assuming that you character’s hair comes back as well?

Mindy Kaling: It is the fastest growing hair on primetime television!

Access: Will we go from seeing her in a couple of episodes with short hair and then all of a sudden it’s back?

Mindy: No it grows. We do different wigs. For me, it’s a dream because every girl wants to have short hair, but then all the guys in our life are like, ‘We hate it!’

WATCH IT NOW: Chris Messina On ‘The Mindy Project’ Season 2 — Will Mindy & Danny Get Together?

Access: In Haiti, your character got engaged. But eventually, Mindy will become single again?

Mindy: Yes. It’s hard to root for a character who like seamlessly has a great job and gets engaged and gets married. That’s not ultimately what you root for… at least not yet anyway. So she has kind of a sad breakup, but then it’s good. She gets to date and that’s been really fun with those guest stars and stuff.

Access: Who is the dream person you would love to date in the show?

Mindy: Oh man! So many! Danny McBride is so funny. I love him. I think he’d be fantastic on the show. Seth Rogan, I’d love to come back on the show. Jonah Hill. I mean there is just so many.

Access: Where do you get the inspiration for the dating scenarios in the show?

Mindy: Well, a lot from my personal life and the writers’ personal lives. Collectively we are all — everyone’s pretty much in their 20s or 30s and we all have so many painful years of dating unsuccessfully.

Access: Do you have time to date though because you are the creator of the show, you’re’ obviously a writer on the show, you’re the star of the show, you have to promote the show and have a million things on your plate. When do you have time for Mindy Kaling?

Mindy: I pack my weekends with little breaks and stuff like that. Right now, since the show is sort of still starting I’ve kind of put that to the way side.

Access: Do you sleep at all?

Mindy: I don’t sleep that much. I’ve said this before that you don’t really want to sleep when you have this job because it’s your dream job. You just want to be awake and be living your dream.

“The Mindy Project” Season 2 premieres tonight at 9:30/8:30c on Fox
