‘The Originals’ Season 2 Preview: Hybrid Struggles For Hayley & Nina Dobrev To Cross Over

New hybrid Hayley is in for a tough time when The CW’s “The Originals” returns for Season 2 on Monday night.

At the end of Season 1, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) had to give up her child, Hope, for the baby’s safety, and several months later, when the show picks up, the new mom is suffering badly from the loss. She’s not only dealing with the forced absence of her child and having to keep up the lie that Hope is dead, but she’s also trying to adjust to becoming a hybrid.

All of these things are also putting kinks in her relationship with Elijah (Daniel Gillies).

“I think that Elijah sees how broken and devastated she is, not just by the loss of having to give up her child, but the loss of her pure blooded werewolf aspect,” Co-Executive Producer Michael Narducci told TV reporters at a screening of the show’s Season 2 premiere. “She’s now a hybrid and what that means is she’s no longer the pure wolf.”

Hayley spent much of Season 1 trying to find out more about who she was and where she came from. She did and it helped center her character. But now, the big hybrid change (which happened after she died, but was turned into a vampire because of Hope’s blood in the Season 1 finale), has left Hayley feeling unsettled again.

“She’s devastated and she’s going through all the after effects that you would expect of someone recently becoming a vampire. On top of that, you know, you’ve got your werewolf, your wild impulses, your instinctive desire to hunt and kill and that’s accentuated by the fact that she’s a vampire, so she’s a mess,” he said.

New Orleans human Cami (Leah Pipes) has her own demons to deal with this season. With Klaus, Elijah and Hayley keeping the secret that Hope is alive to themselves, Cami is feeling awful and like she could have done more to help prevent Hope’s “death.”

“I think she feels a certain amount of responsibility, and when we talk about that, it’s a little bit of the Spider-Man mythology — if I had just stopped that thief from getting away, he might not have killed my Uncle Ben. If Cami had gotten involved in the world, she might’ve been able to keep that baby alive, from her perspective,” Narducci said.

The producer said Cami’s feelings, combined with her psychology background, will see her continuing to try and help her supernatural friends.

And on the show this season, in just a few episodes time, “The Originals” will get a new female face for one episode: “The Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev is coming over to play Tatia.

“We have a storyline in Episode 5 that will involve a flashback to the time of the Vikings and Nina Dobrev playing Tatia,” Narducci said.

“What I can say about it is just there’s no possible way to tell this story if we didn’t get Nina Dobrev,” he continued.

Narducci said the actress worked really hard to take on the work of the additional acting gig.

“She had to work double time driving back and forth between sets and she got to be in scenes with both of our leads — both Daniel [Gillies, who plays Elijah] and Joseph [Morgan, who plays Klaus] and we tell a story that will make you understand her fate, what happened to her, her relationship with both brothers and why what happened between her and the two brothers is so beautiful and also tragic.”

The Season 2 premiere of “The Originals” airs Monday at 8/7c on The CW.
