‘The Vampire Diaries’: Ian Somerhalder On How Damon Salvatore Begins Season 7

“The Vampire Diaries” returns Thursday night on The CW, and despite the situation with Elena Gilbert, expect Damon Salvatore to remain as witty as ever.

“He jumps right back into it,” Ian told Access Hollywood, when we asked him in a new interview last week if his character will return to showing his usual cheek (in a trailer for the season, he quips, “How long do we have before this evil engulfs the world? Just trying to plan my week”), or if it will take a bit of time to get back up to speed.

“I mean, he’s distraught, but he’s Damon, so he’ll just drink like two bottles of Bourbon, and he’ll get through the night,” Ian continued. “I wouldn’t recommend it… it’s not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live.”

When we find Damon at the start of Season 7, he’ll be coping with the situation of his girlfriend being in a sleep state for the next 6-7 decades (while Bonnie lives) by being there for a friend. He’s supporting Alaric, whose bride, Jo, was killed in the Season 6 finale at their wedding, by her twin brother, Kai.

“He’s drowning himself in Alaric, and he’s really being there for his friend, and then he has Bonnie to back him up and sort of watch over him and babysit him. So, he really wants to help his friend. He wants to help Alaric, and he wants to be there for his brother. He’s got a great support system,” Ian added.

The life of the woman he spent his Season 6, 1994 purgatory period with, being tied (via Kai’s spell) to the sleep-state Elena is in, is something that will mess with Damon Salvatore’s head.

“It’s a very interesting dichotomy of… he’s walking this very fine line of Bonnie — every time he looks at her, he realizes it’s not Elena and that for this two-second window, he remembers how great it would feel if that was her, if Bonnie just wasn’t there, he would get her back. And then, that two-second window passes and he realizes, ‘No, no, no. This is one of my best friends. I love this woman and I want to take care of her, she takes care of me. This is not the way it’s supposed to be and I’m gonna wait. I’m gonna wait, and I’m gonna do right by Elena, I’m gonna do right by Bonnie, I’m gonna do right by Elena and Bonnie and everyone,'” Ian said.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.
