Tina Fey Calls Tracy Morgan’s Homophobic Remarks ‘Disturbing,’ Says The Actor ‘Is Not A Hateful Man’

Tina Fey has spoken out regarding Tracy Morgan’s homophobic remarks (made during the actor’s comedy show in Nashville last week), calling her “30 Rock” co-star’s comments “disturbing.”

“Stand-up comics may have the right to ‘work out’ their material in its ugliest and rawest form in front of an audience, but the violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me,” Fey said in a statement released to Access Hollywood.

Fey, who worked with Morgan on “Saturday Night Live” from 1997 to 2003 before re-connecting with the actor in 2006 for “30 Rock,” said Morgan’s comments are not indicative of his usual demeanor.

“It also doesn’t line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person,” the statement continued. “I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian coworkers at ‘30 Rock,’ without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”

Bob Greenblatt, Chairman NBC Entertainment, also released a statement denouncing Morgan’s rant, saying neither he nor NBC “condone hate or violence of any kind.”

“We will always recognize an artist’s freedom to express him or herself, but not when reckless things are said no matter what the context,” Greenblatt said in the statement. “Unfortunately, Tracy’s comments reflect negatively on both ‘30 Rock’ and NBC – two very all-inclusive and diverse organizations – and we have made it clear to him that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”

, Morgan issued his own apology after unleashing a slew of homophobic remarks during a comedy show in Nashville on June 3.

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others,” the “30 Rock” star said in a statement to Access Hollywood on Friday.

“While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context,” his statement continued.

Morgan’s comments made headlines after Kevin Rogers, who was in attendance at the June 3 show, wrote a Facebook post titled, “Why I No Longer ‘Like’ Tracy Morgan — A Must Read.”

According to Rogers – who called himself a longtime fan of the “Saturday Night Live” alum – Morgan’s rant included the comedian saying he did not believe women could be lesbians and said if his son ever told him he was gay that he would stab him.
