Top 12 Headlines Of 2012: The Rise Of The Hunger Games (#9)

With “Harry Potter” and “The Twilight Saga” coming to a close, movie-goers and young adult reading enthusiasts looked for a new wealth of book-to-big screen adventure and in 2012, they found it in “The Hunger Games.”

As AccessHollywood.com counts down The Top 12 Headlines Of 2012, we continue with the big screen adaption of “The Hunger Games,” based on the wildly popular Suzanne Collins trilogy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

The movie debuted with a $155 million opening weekend, giving it the third-best debut ever, behind the $169.2 million opening for the “Harry Potter” finale and the $158.4 million opening of 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” and set a revenue record for a non-sequel.

Access’ Shaun Robinson spoke with Jennifer at the world premiere about how her life has changed for better and worse since taking on the role of Katniss.

Shaun also spoke to Josh and Liam about the fan pandemonium at the red carpet event.

Soon after the movie’s successful opening, it was announced that director Gary Ross would not direct “Catching Fire,” the second installment in the franchise and Francis Lawrence, whose past credits include “Water for Elephants” and “I Am Legend,” would take over.

As slew of new actors joined the cast for “Catching Fire,” including British actor Sam Claflin, who will play the trident-wielding tribute Finnick Odair.

Other stars joining the sequel include Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, Jena Malone as tribute Johanna Mason, Lynn Cohen as tribute Mags and Amanda Plummer as tribute Wiress (nicknamed “Nuts” by fellow tributes).

During filming on “Catching Fire,” Liam was one of the first actors to suffer an injury.
