Tori Spelling gave birth to her fourth child – a boy, Finn — in August and the 39-year-old mom is opening up about the pregnancy complications that landed her on bed rest for nearly three months and almost cost her her life.
First, the pregnancy was a shock in itself, as Tori had just given birth to daughter Hattie less than two months before learning she was pregnant again.
“I had a migraine, and had to go to the hospital, and they asked me to take a urine test to see if I was pregnant,” Tori – who recently debuted her new kids clothing line, Little Maven, with JC Penney — told Access Hollywood’s Kit Hoover in a new interview. “I said, ‘Oh no, no, no– my baby is like a month right now. Like, I was just nursing her earlier. Don’t worry, I am not pregnant.’
“They said, ‘I am so sorry, we just have to do this.’ So, I did the test and he said, ‘You’re pregnant’ and I said, ‘That can’t be true,’” she continued, adding that she then insisted on a blood test, which confirmed the surprising news.
Two months into her pregnancy, Tori experienced a “massive bleed” and thought she had suffered a miscarriage.
“I was devastated. Then we went to the doctor, and they said, ‘Nope, there’s a healthy little heartbeat in there,’” she recalled. “So, that was all very confusing, and that was just the start of it.”
The bleeds continued to worsen and Tori was diagnosed with placenta previa at 18 weeks.
Two weeks later, she suffered another “scary, massive bleed” and was forced to ask daughter Stella, 4, to go get Tori’s husband Dean McDermott from another room for help.
“I screamed for Stella and she came. I said, ‘You’ve got to go get Daddy. Tell him Mommy’s bleeding bad,’” Tori said. “I’m always devastated to think that that’s what she remembers — that look. There was just blood covering the bathroom.”
Fortunately, Stella handled the scary scene like a champ and brought her dad in to help her mom. Dean took Tori to the hospital, where she remained – on bed rest – until Finn’s birth.
Tori admits she was worried – worried she may lose Finn, or even worse, lose her life due to the condition and not be around to raise her children – but she forced negative thoughts out of her mind and concentrated on having a healthy baby.
“I just had to commit, and I did. I literally look back, and I’m like, ‘Damn. I guess I am strong!’” she said. “We have doubts about ourselves– up and down, career, personal, emotions.
“When you go through something like that, you realize that women are so damn strong,” she continued. “Specifically once you become a mom, you just throw yourself in and go for it.”
One thing that kept Tori’s mind on a positive track during her months in the hospital was designing clothes for her Little Maven line, which debuted at JC Penney on September 1.
“I was designing the whole time [at the hospital]… We’d sit there and have meetings, and actually, that was something that got me through it, because I would be envisioning like, ‘My baby will be wearing this one day’” she said, adding that her kids “actually wear” clothes from her line.
“It’s accessible, it’s affordable, it’s great. Everything is $12 – $20,” she added. “They grow so fast — why spend more?”
