Tracy Morgan Speaks Out Again On Homophobic Rant; Margaret Cho Chimes In

Tracy Morgan has spoken out again following Friday’s apology after he made headlines for unleashing a slew of homophobic remarks during a comedy show in Nashville on June 3. Plus, Margaret Cho, who guest starred on NBC’s “30 Rock” with Morgan, also chimed in on his hurtful rant.

Morgan addressed the incident with Russell Simmons on GlobalGrind on Sunday.

“The truth is if I had a gay son, I would love him just as much as if he was straight … I might have to try to love even more because I know of the difficulty that he would have in society,” Morgan explained.

“Of all the sicknesses, there is probably none more abusive than homophobia. My heart is committed to giving everyone the same rights that I deserve for myself. I don’t care if you love the same sex as long as you have the ability to love someone,” he continued. “Also, you should have the right no matter who you are to protect and serve our country. I am deeply sorry for the comments I made. What I am most sad about is the comments I made about kids and bullying. I would never want any young person to think that I wasn’t on their side and if any young person thinks they can bully a young gay kid, come see me at ‘30 Rock.’ On the corner, I would be happy to meet you. Or Brooklyn if you can’t make it into Manhattan.

“When all of this set in, I realized how hurtful my words were. Not asking anyone to feel sorry for me or pity me, but I definitely don’t want or need people to defend me,” he told Simmons, a longtime ally of the LGBT community. “In my heart, I know that the words I used are indefensible. I appreciate the love from my friends and fans, but I was wrong. Period. Now, I just gotta think of some funny sh**, not some sh** that gets me knocked upside my head… I believe everyone deserves the right to be happy and marry who they want too; gay, white, black, male or female. Let me know where the rally’s at Russ. I’m there!”

On Monday’s Access Hollywood Live, Margaret Cho, who recently guest starred on “30 Rock” as North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il alongside Morgan’s Tracy Jordan character, expressed her feelings about the incident.

“I was really hurt by it. Anytime anybody says anything homophobic, in any context, it just murders me,” she told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover. “I feel odd about it because it seems like Tracy was wonderful to work with and I’m surprised, but I don’t want this to take away from Tina Fey’s brilliance. The show is brilliant because of Tina Fey and she is an amazing supporter of gay rights.”

The comedienne was glad to see people react so strongly to the situation.

“What’s amazing is he apologized right away, so I’m proud our community has that power to demand an apology that would come very quickly and that’s changing the times. We’ve really changed the way people view gay people and that’s powerful,” she continued.

Adding, “What I’m calling for is a moment where we talk to kids and we say it’s okay to be gay and to accept the fact that they are gay and to take this moment to talk about homophobic language because it’s gone by unchecked for so many years and finally we have a moment where we can say, ‘This is wrong,’ and he’s already admitted that it’s wrong.”
