Uma Thurman: It Was ‘Magical’ Becoming Marilyn Monroe on ‘Smash’

Audiences are anxiously awaiting the February arrival of NBC’s “Smash,” and once the curtain goes up on the new series, viewers will see a bevvy of Hollywood beauties gunning for the role of Marilyn Monroe – including Uma Thurman, whose character is battling for the part.

“It was great — it was really fun,” Uma told Access Hollywood correspondent Jill Martin of filming scenes as the “Some Like It Hot” legend, at the “Smash” premiere in New York City on Thursday. “It’s a great cast, a great crew of people all filming here in New York and even on Broadway, so, it’s a treat.

“I love Broadway, I love musicals and song and dance,” she added. “It’s really good.”

The 41-year-old star admitted playing the legendary Marilyn Monroe is no ordinary feat.

“Marilyn’s a magical mythical creature, so you just have to think magical, mythical thoughts when you play her,” she told Jill.

“Smash” marks Uma’s first time starring on a TV series, and the “Kill Bill” star said the script had to be extraordinarily special in order for her to make the small screen leap.

“It is really special,” Uma told Jill of the Steven Spielberg-produced series. “And, you know, anything that’s sort of centered around the theater and just the art of performance and [that] kind of drama around it, obviously, being an actor I love it!”

“Smash” – which also stars Debra Messing, Angelica Huston, Katharine McPhee and Broadway vet Megan Hilty — premieres on Sunday, February 6, on NBC.
