Rosie O’Donnell has let another one of her famous Rosie rants fly and this time, the 48-year-old TV personality is questioning the song choices for “Glee’s” latest star, full-figured female wrestler Lauren Zizes (played by Ashley Fink).
“I have to believe that [‘Glee’ co-creators] Ryan [Murphy] and Brad [Falchuk] have something up their sleeve and that [Lauren] can really sing because ‘I Know What Boys Like’ last night was not what I was expecting,” Rosie told Access of the character’s first performance on Tuesday night’s “Glee” episode, in an interview in NYC on Wednesday. “I was expecting a whole Shrek-like reveal where [Puck, played by Mark Salling] becomes Fiona-ish.
“I just was like, ‘Where’s the Susan Boyle moment? She’s gonna belt it out of the park!’ and then she did, ‘I know what boys like, I know what guys want’? Rosie told Access. “I was like, ‘I want more than this.’”
Rosie revealed that McKinley High’s latest favorite has many of her fuller-figured friends up in arms – though that may be exactly what the producers are trying to accomplish.
“It really, really strikes a chord with every overweight woman I know,” Rosie told Access. “Every woman I know who’s heavy has strong feelings about that storyline. They’re like, ‘Can you believe that? I think that’s horrible. That never happens in school.’
“‘That character is so unlikable. Why didn’t they get a pretty heavy girl? They should’ve gotten someone beautiful like Brooke Elliot,’” she continued, referencing the comments other women have told her. “I’m like, ‘Every story deserves to be told. And the way that you’re relating to it means that it’s doing its job. It’s evoking a lot of emotion inside of you.’”
However, Rosie said she has faith in the show’s creators to showcase Ashley’s character the right way.
“I trust Ryan and Brad. I know that [Lauren] is going to have a voice and I know maybe Puck’s going to break her heart, or she’s going to break Puck’s heart. Something’s going to happen and she’s going to come out and sing something like, ‘I Am What I Am,’” she added.
Rosie also shard her thoughts on Billy Ray Cyrus’ controversial new statements about being “scared” for his daughter, Miley, and the people who try to influence her in a negative way now that she’s a legal adult.
“A 16 or 18-year-old girl is going to separate from the parents no matter what,” Rosie told Access. “They’re going to smoke some salvia — whatever the hell that is — they’re going to drink some beer. This is what happens when kids are 18 and they’re trying to separate.
“So, I don’t know that it necessarily had to do with [Miley] being in show business,” she continued. “I think he’s doing what a lot of us are doing that have teenagers, including me, [saying], ‘What the hell is going on here? I thought I was in control of this place and now the kids are acting out. The animals are ruining the zoo!’”
