Vanity Fair has assembled 14 of Hollywood hottest stars – plus one big screen legend and a lion cub – for the cover it’s 17th annual Hollywood Issue.
The three-panel cover includes a slew of leading ladies and men including Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund and original “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” star Noomi Rapace.
“We wanted to evoke the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, an era of smoky, alluring elegance,” cover fashion and style director Jessica Diehl told the mag “We had the gentlemen looking dashing in black tie, whilst the ladies were radiant in spring’s gowns—from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent—and glittering with diamonds from Chanel and other arbiters of glamour.”
Inside the mag, award show favorites and newcomers featured in stunning in stunning pictorials.
Director David Fincher and writer Aaron Sorkin – along with Jesse Eisenberg – are called “The Misfits,” Colin Firth earns the title of “The King Of Pain,” Annette Bening is named “The Working Mom” of Hollywood, while Ben Affleck has been dubbed by the mag as “The Comeback Kid.”
Young stars Hailee Steinfeld and Elle Fanning took the title of “The Old Souls,” the always-surprising Helena Bonham Carter is called “The Changeling,” followed closely by “The Shape-Shifter” Christian Bale.
Nicole Kidman is simply named “The Star,” Natalie Portaman gets “The Rare Bird” label by the mag and Halle Berry was dubbed “The Drama Queen.”
In 2010, Vanity Fair came under fire for failing to include any actors of color in the all-girl cover lineup that included Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan Abbie Cornish and six other non-diverse actresses.
This year’s cover includes a little more diversity with “The Hurt Locker’s” Anthony Mackie and “Parks and Recreation” beauty Rashida Jones, whose father is Quincy Jones, making the lineup.
The March Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on February 3 and goes wide on February 8.
