VMAs: Justin Bieber Gets Emotional After Live Performance Of ‘What Do You Mean’

Even superstars need a good cry now and then. Justin Bieber got emotional after his performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

The pop sensation had just wrapped his first live rendition of new single “What Do You Mean,” capping off the song with a dramatic spoken-word monologue that brought the crowd to its feet and nearly moved Justin to tears.

“Life is a journey. Sometimes a battle, full of the unexpected. Sometimes we focus on the destination, and forget to focus on that journey,” the 21-year-old said, narrating an unexpected interlude. “But when you fall, it allows you to get up stronger. It allows you to lean not on your own understanding.”

His message continued, saying, “Give in to faith, and believe in something bigger than yourself. And find your purpose.”

The dramatic moment then literally took flight, as a harness lifted Justin into the air and out of sight. He returned to the stage and was visibly overwhelmed to see a standing ovation before him.

Host Miley Cyrus may have realized her planned response was now rendered awkward, given the scene’s emotional tone.

“Wow,” she said from the stage, wearing a huge overcoat covered in metallic tassels. The star decided to push forth with a humorous transition.

“Well, I was gonna keep this jacket on, but now that I know Justin Bieber can fly?” she said, and ripped off the jacket to reveal yet another slinky costume.
