‘The Walking Dead’ Season 6 Finale Is ‘A Gut Punch,’ Says EP Robert Kirkman

This Sunday night, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” Season
6 finale is coming out swinging.

“I think the best way to put it is it’s a gut
punch,” Executive Producer Robert Kirkman told Access Hollywood, teasing
the episode when we caught up with him at Tuesday’s “Fear the Walking
Dead” Season 2 premiere screening in Los Angeles.

“You’ve been watching the show for six seasons, and you
think you know the rules, and you think you know how things are going to go,
and you really don’t,” he continued. “It’s an element that’s thrown
in that changes everything and really puts you in a place where, going into
Season 7 and beyond, you have no idea what to expect. And I feel like we’ve
established that that’s kind of how the show works, you never know what to expect, but somehow we’re upping the
game a little bit and really kind of changing things in some really startling
and scary ways.”

The episode will feature the debut of comic book villain Negan, played by “The Good Wife’s” Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Kirkman said there was no other actor alive who could have brought the character to life.

“Jeffrey Dean Morgan was, I think, the only guy available, like around, alive that could play Negan. He’s the guy that really, I think, embodies the character in a way because as brutal and as terrifying and as horrifying as Negan is as a human being, he’s also incredibly likable and personable and just — you kind of want to hang out with him while he’s killing you,” the producer said. “It’s like this really weird dual thing. I mean, great example, he walks through ‘The Walking Dead’ comic book killing all of your favorite characters and yet he’s one of the most popular characters in the comic book, so you need an actor that can do that and that’s really hard to find. But Jeffrey Dean Morgan is somebody that has proven that he can handle that and having seen the things I’ve seen, he does accomplish that. Yeah, in a big way. It’s great.”
