Walter Cronkite Memorial To Be Held At Lincoln Center

A public memorial for late anchorman Walter Cronkite will be held at New York’s Lincoln Center at a date to be announced, sources at CBS News told Access Hollywood.

A private funeral for the iconic newsman, dubbed the “most trusted man in America,” will be held on Thursday at St. Bartholemew’s on New York City’s Fifth Avenue. He will be buried alongside his wife Betsy in Missouri, the sources said. The public memorial will come at a later time.

Cronkite died on Friday at the age of 92, of cerebral vascular disease. He helmed the “CBS Evening News” from 1962 to 1981, covering such momentous events as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the 1969 moon landing.

In a statement to Access, President Barack Obama remembered him as “more than just an anchor.”

“He was family,” the president said. “In an era before blogs and e-mail, cell phones and cable, he was the news. Walter invited us to believe in him and he never let us down. This country has lost an icon and dear friend. And he will be truly missed.”
