Was Chris Brown Told To Cry During Michael Jackson BET Tribute?

Chris Brown gave what seemed to be a genuinely emotional performance at the BET Awards on Sunday night, breaking into tears during his tribute medley to late idol Michael Jackson – and “BedRock” singer Lloyd has taken to his blog to defend Chris’ authenticity after appearing to call it into question.

On Sunday night, Lloyd revealed to Rap-Up.com that he’d told Chris, “Man, you gotta get up there. You gotta cry, you gotta really show your heart to the world” – prompting questions from some corners over whether Chris had faked the tears.

However, on Tuesday, Lloyd took to his blog to clarify his comments and defend his friend.

“I consider Chris a friend. He’s been through a lot in the past couple years. I never told him to go onstage and cry,” Lloyd wrote on Tuesday. “We spoke recently, and I told him as a friend that people hadn’t really seen him be vulnerable about his situation last year [with Rihanna]. I thought he was holding back and needed to let that emotion out. Him crying at the BET Awards was real, I could feel it.”

Chris kept a low profile for much of 2009, pleading guilty to felony assault over his February altercation with Rihanna and skipping that year’s BET Awards while trying to rehabilitate his image.

“Feeling that love on stage was probably overwhelming,” Lloyd blogged on Tuesday. “Plus MJ being gone and him performing ‘Man in the Mirror,’ that song is powerful, especially for his situation. It pushed him over the edge.

“To say that he was faking or that I’m hating on him, that’s some b***s***,” he continued. “I never saw MJ perform live, but [Chris] is the closest thing I’ve witnessed. Chris is back, and I’m just as excited as his fans are.”
